Judicial Branch Expands Preventive Detention to Peruvian Former President Pedro Castillo

“The Judiciary extends by 14 months the term of pre-trial detention against Pedro Castillo Terrones, accused of the crime of rebellion and others,” the Judiciary said on social network X.
The Judicial Branch of Peru extended on Monday the term of the precautionary measure of imprisonment against former President Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), meanwhile an investigation is being carried out into the alleged crimes that are charged.

“The Judiciary extends by 14 months the term of pre-trial detention against Pedro Castillo Terrones, accused of the crime of rebellion and others,” the Judiciary said on social network X.
In addition, the entity expanded in its information that “the extended period of pre-trial detention responds to the fact that the proceedings against the former president are in the intermediate stage. Measure will be computed from June 7, 2024 until August 6, 2025”.
For his part, during the virtual hearing held last Thursday, Castillo said that the tax charges that are made by the Prosecutor against him «are more false than the eyelashes and nose of the pinocchio that is in the Palace», alluding to the de facto president Dina Boluarte.

«Today I am 18 months in pre-trial detention. Only in Peru, not in another corner of the world, is a president first arrested and then a cow. Only with me they don’t want me to have the right to my defense», Castillo said.
Previously, last February, the Supreme Court of Peru rejected the appeal of former President Pedro Castillo, with which his defense sought to have the preventive detention measure reviewed.
At that time it was determined that Castillo served 36 months in prison, after being accused of being the alleged leader of a criminal organization that allegedly committed illegal acts during his administration in the Ministry of Transport, ProvÃas Descentralizado, PetroPerú and the Ministry of Housing.
Regardless of the decision taken by the Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation, presided over by lawyer Juan Carlos Checkley, Pedro Castillo will continue in the Barbadillo prison in Lima, in compliance with 36 months of preventive taxes.
